Chemical and nuclear engineering

I’m a high school student that will certainly be a chemical design undergrad later this year. Recently I have actually end up being even more interested in Nuclear design, and also via even more research I have actually found that both types of design are reasonably equivalent.

You watching: Chemical and nuclear engineering

Is undergrad chem E an excellent route to a future in graduate Nuclear engineering?

(I am acquainted with general similarities and distinctions in between areas and just how nuclear engineering have the right to occasionally be taken into consideration a niche of chem E)

Any various other advice/insight is much appreciated

Thank you

Go ChemE. If you are really interested in Nuclear at the end of your level, go Navy. A Navy recruiter will call you within 6 months of graduation to teach Nuclear classes in SC. It will be worth its weight in Nuclear Engineering and you still have actually a Chem E to fall back on.

Yeah at my university they even have actually nuclear themed classes constructed into the electives for those that desire to go that course.

Personally I would certainly reccomend you stick to vanilla Chem eng. I am bias however beccause that is what I did in the time of my undergrad/masters, however I simply feel that pure chem eng gives you a great "jack of all trades" facet to your degree, and also won't count versus you for any type of application.

Chem & Nuclear, Chem & Energy, Chem & Materials are all excellent degrees but I would certainly avoid truely specalising also early on in your career, get a feel for the as a whole topic initially. Do your bachalors then specialise in your masters, no press.

You never before know, you could uncover you choose phrama, products or complex commodities. Don't tie yourself down.

A friend of mine who works at the nuclear plant in OH? Put his project this method. I'm doing one of 2 things: throughout planned maintenance the plant is dvery own. That suggests I'm functioning 80 hr weeks and super stressed making certain it gets ago digital on time . The other thing is wating roughly bored out of my mind waiting for somepoint to go catastrophically wrong.

If you don't desire to carry out just plain ChemE then look into some type of BioChemE. I loved it. Another tip is to dive deep into controls or learn to code. A college frifinish of mine was greatly head hunted through a BA because he might code and do procedure.

Also, tbelow are practically no tasks that require a nuclear design degree.

I recognize a bunch of mechanical engineers who work at nuclear plants.

Here me out. I remained in the nuclear market for a while.

The nuclear industry in the US is dying. The Democratic party directly up desires to kill it off and also are talking around trying to shut dvery own every one of the nuclear plants. (In order to fight worldwide warming or something, we'll get rid of the thing that makes many of the carbon complimentary energy because that provides so a lot feeling.) Republicans don't really treatment either. They're slightly less retarded than Democrats around this particular worry, but presently natural gas is so dirt cheap there's no allude in structure nuclear plants if you think climate readjust is a Chinese hoax.

I actually operated with a bunch if nuclear designers for a while. Two of my ideal friends are nuclear designers and also we've talked extensively around this. One of them is currently going for a masters degree in a different area because the nuclear industry is in such a shithole. I would certainly strongly recommend that you DO NOT major in nuclear design.

Nuclear power is being regulated out of visibility. Like, tbelow will certainly be quality requirements that don't actually make the plant safer but are basically impossible to fulfill, so building a brand-new plant is nearly difficult. There's no political will certainly to settle it though.

There's really no factor to major in nuclear design, unless you especially desire to carry out the handful of tasks that require it:

fuel assembly architecture (I intend, I guess you have the right to perform this, however it's basically boring and also repetitive tasks.)

functioning for the DOE (you most likely don't wanna perform this unless you wanna either spfinish your life cleaning up shit and also hating the federal government or building nuclear weapons)

That's literally it though.

If you desire to work at a nuclear power plant while they still exist, you might too research one more engineering discipline so you actually have other task options if you can't find occupational at a nuclear plant. Most of a nuclear power plant is just industrial devices that doesn't have actually anything to do particularly with the nuclear stuff. They have way even more civil, mechanical, and also electric engineers than nuclear engineers. Same thing for functioning through the navy.
